MAGNET UNIT

OVERVIEW

Teachers will be magnetized when using the materials in this kit designed to help their students succeed on the current CST grade 5 science test. Students experiment with the power of attraction and repelling by using different size magnets. The Magnetic Field Window allows students to safely play with iron filings and visually create the magnetic field pattern. Understanding magnetic field patterns leads to a discussion of compass construction and how our Earth is a magnet. Building electromagnets and discussing their real-world applications rounds out this four lesson unit of study. The vocabulary posters included in each lesson will help students lay a foundation for Next Generation Science Standards in middle school. A lesson plan timeline averages 50 minutes, but can easily be broken into smaller sessions.
